Hekayas
Serialised African storytelling, built so the money can travel from a reader to a creator without a foreign platform sitting in the middle taking a cut and setting the rules.
What it is
Hekayas is a reading platform for African comics and fiction, published in series rather than as one-off downloads. Readers follow a story as it is written; creators build an audience that comes back rather than one that buys once.
What we built
A serialised reader that works on a mid-range Android phone over mobile data, a creator portal for publishing chapters, and the earning mechanics that connect the two. The reading experience is the product — everything else is in service of a page turning quickly.
What it taught us
Speed is a feature you can feel and a feature people leave over. Most of the engineering that matters here is invisible: how much is fetched, how much is cached, and how quickly the next page is already there before it is asked for.
